As a result of recent expansion, a new development was built on the eastern side of Palma with a middle school, multiple strip malls, and several duplexes and apartments. Palma was one of the most affordable places to live at the time since an oil refinery occupied much of the city. The city's west side would also be redeveloped in 1958 with more duplexes, a motel, and many single-family homes, along with an entirely new circled section later constructed in 1986, replacing more old houses. In 1965, the oil refinery was abandoned after the owners failed to follow safety regulations. The abandoned refinery attracted a lot of criminals, so the City of Greenfield planned a new police and fire station for Palma. In 2016, the city dismantled the oil refinery and recent development, including [[Palma Altos Retirement Communities]].
