Wharf 6

Wharf 6 is a privately-owned shopping and leisure complex north of Downtown Greenfield. Notable features include a carousel, the original branch of The Blue Crab Grill, and Puddles the Duck - a large, floating art installation by local artist Florence Hausman.

History

Wharf 6 was created after Piers 4 and 6 were merged into a large wharf. Originally utilized by the fishing industry, the wharf was purchased by Moses Markham in 1967 as the Greenfield fishing industry declined. It was briefly converted into a port for the tour boat business run by Markham before a temporary carnival and fair was constructed in 1970. Markham sold the wharf in 1973, but carnival operations continued until a fire destroyed the structures in 1977.

The wharf lay abandoned, with the surviving carousel rusting away as the only structure, until Caeluxe Properties purchased the wharf in 1978. After 3 years of restoration, verification of the integrity of the pier, and construction, Wharf 6 reopened as a shopping and tourist destination with the carousel as the central attraction. Following damage sustained in the 1994 Greenfield Earthquake, most structures on the wharf were razed and a new shopping center was built, with the carousel being moved to a corner of the pier.

The new Wharf 6 reopened in 1997, anchored by The Blue Crab Grill, The Morro Bay Company, and the carousel and new "mini fair" area.
