Novia Ground Solutions, commonly known as Novia, is an aviation services business providing ground handling, cargo handling, cargo forwarding and into-plane (ITP) fuelling, based in California, USA.

History

Novia Ground Solutions at GIA

Novia Ground Solutions was established in 1978 in San Diego, CA, with just five employees. Since operations began at San Diego International Airport in the spring of 1979 it has grown to other airports in California including Los Angeles Intl. Airport (LAX) and San Francisco Intl. Airport (SFO). Today, Novia Ground Solutions employs 3,100 people who handle passenger, cargo, ramp and technical services for airlines at airports across California:

  • Greenfield International Airport (GIA)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Oakland International Airport
  • Sacramento International Airport
  • San Jose International Airport
  • Long Beach Airport
  • John Wayne Airport
  • San Diego International Airport
  • Palm Springs International Airport

In 2011, Novia Ground Solutions were close to lose its 7-year handling license in John Wayne Airport to Globe Handling. This would have led to the loss of thousands of jobs and as a consequence a major 24-hour strike was carried out in June 2011 that affected many flights and passengers. Novia Ground Solutions went to court as they believed juridical mistakes had been made. The judge ruled that a new investigation was to be conducted and that, in the meantime, Novia could continue operations at the airport. Before a new investigation was concluded, Globe Handling took over Flightcare, the other ground handling company at the airport. Note that only two handling licences are issued at John Wayne Airport.
