Los Llanos
Los Llanos is a designated community area on the east side of Greenfield, California. It is located east of Downtown Greenfield.
History
The 1950s, following the close of World War II, sparked a significant population explosion in the United States. This demographic shift kindled the American Dream of owning a spacious single-family house with a garden. Los Llanos was among the communities that emerged during this period, epitomizing this idealized vision of American life.
Construction activities in Los Llanos spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1950s, with the northern neighborhood being primarily built between 1949 and 1952, followed by the development of central areas from 1951 to 1953. These expansive suburban developments gradually absorbed the small town of Los Llanos, located near Greenfield's city center.
While Los Llanos was not a significant town in terms of size, it was almost entirely demolished to accommodate the burgeoning suburban landscape enveloping Greenfield. A few relics of the original town managed to survive the sweep of urbanization, including some shops and the iconic church that still stands as a testament to the past. The rest of the area was transformed into contemporary strip malls and housing developments, significantly altering the town's character.
In 1972, the residents successfully campaigned for the demolition of a large industrial plant, marking a victory for community-led initiatives. The City of Greenfield repurposed the plant's site into a lively neighborhood punctuated by several stores and a popular bowling alley.
Further change arrived in 1979 when a warehouse was leveled to make way for the Los Llanos High School. This development was part of the broader Rio Pueblo redevelopment project, an ambitious plan aimed at revitalizing the area.
The wave of redevelopment carried on into the 21st century. In 2015, a new suburban community featuring a golf course and a YMCA was established alongside the Sonora River, further enhancing the amenities available to residents and contributing to the ongoing evolution of Los Llanos.
